A man wielding a knife attacked two female supermarket employees in the East Village yesterday, leaving one dead and another in serious condition, police said.
The attack took place at about 3:15 p.m. inside Key Foods on the corner of Avenue A and 4th Street, police said. The victims were attacked inside an elevated manager’s booth in the front of the supermarket.
The suspect, who investigators believe may have been an employee, fled the supermarket on foot after the attack. Police found a knife on the sidewalk outside of the Key Foods that they believe is the murder weapon.
Both victims were rushed to Beth Israel Hospital, where one, an unidentified 22-year-old, died from at least one stab wound to the stomach. The second victim, who remains in serious condition, was stabbed in the stomach and leg, police said.
Police are questioning Key Foods employees about the suspect, who is described as a fair-skinned Hispanic male wearing a green jacket with a Canada Dry logo, police said.
“We can’t give any comments right now. … I’m doing ten things right now. We’re still in the middle of talking to police,” a Key Foods employee said by telephone before hanging up.
