Bloomberg for President

I was, frankly, stunned by your editorial “Bloomberg for President?” [February 8, 2006].

I would be overjoyed if Mayor Bloomberg would leave the Republican Party, which I love so much and to which he has done enormous damage with his support of gay marriage, abortion on demand, higher taxes and spending, his current feud with State Senator Serphin Maltese and other conservatives, and his unflinching support of the hapless commissioner of the Administration for Children’s Services, John Mattingly. Not to mention his personal jihad on cigarette smokers and the fact that he has stated that, unlike Mayor Giuliani, he would not have tossed Yasser Arafat out of Lincoln Center during a performance.

Please send Mr. Bloomberg a voter registration card so that he might change his voter affiliation. Mr. Bloomberg, like Ross Perot before him, is what happens when a billionaire grows bored with his toys. On second thought, perhaps he could do less damage to the nation than he has already done to New York City.

‘Sense and Sensitivity’

Mark Steyn deftly illustrates just how hypocritical have been the vast majority of Western voices heard regarding the Muslim furor over the Danish publication of various depictions of the Prophet Muhammad [“Sense and Sensitivity,” Opinion, February 6, 2006].

Most people – myself included – had probably not thought about the fact that these “spontaneous” demonstrations against the perceived desecration were actually quite well coordinated, most likely by the usual suspect governments and/or terrorist organizations, as evidenced by the sudden appearance of previously obscure flags in rural areas.

This fact leads to the obvious question: If Iran or some other terrorist state or organization had a nuclear weapon and was capable of delivering it to Denmark, would they have done so in retaliation for the Jyllands-Posten’s grave of fense? And, if so, would British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw have refrained from criticizing that action and counseled against retaliation out of “sensitivity” to the perpetrators’ religious motivation?
