‘Flags Now Flying Cleaner’
Bradley Hope’s splendid series of articles on the mistreatment and neglect of some American flags reminds me of past discussions I have had with European friends [“Flags Now Flying Cleaner, Brighter,” Page 1, March 8, 2006].
In many countries, monarchs and royal families have their own standards, which are distinct from their national flags. The British, for example, can look light-heartedly upon Prince William when he wears boxer shorts or a waistcoat made of the Union Jack.
In the United States, however, the special nature of our flag makes using it as an article of clothing beyond distasteful.
Europeans seem to have a difficult time making this distinction. But, unfortunately, so do some New York City merchants.
I have been known to walk into local stores to scold owners whose window displays included using the flag in a clearly inappropriate manner (e.g., as a tablecloth).

‘Carter Seeks Vote in U.N.’
Thank you for your journalist’s column regarding the former president, Jimmy Carter [“Carter Seeks Vote in U.N. Against U.S.,” Benny Avni, Page 1, March 3, 2006].
Mr. Carter has always been a “cut and run” president and politician. He will protect dictators, and any other country that holds its citizens hostage to maintain internal power.
He has supported those world leaders who have slaughtered innocent civilians and imprisoned democratic leaders throughout the world.
He has approved of corrupted voting in countries needing objective and honest elections.
Mr. Carter is no friend of the United States or its citizens. It would be most informative to extend the coverage of Mr. Carter’s efforts to destroy the U.S. in the United Nations.

‘The Three Wives Club’
Would you let Mark Hemingway know that I appreciate his article on the “The Three Wives Club”? Hollywood is decaying in morals and values [Arts & Letters, March 7, 2006].
What happened to shows that promote values and morals and support families?
Bravo! Bravo to you, Mark Hemingway.
