‘Booksellers Fight Back As 5 New Stores Open’

The review of five new bookstores in the metropolitan area helps assure the curious and the specialist of a healthy New York City book “scene” [New York, “Booksellers Fight Back As 5 New Stores Open,” January 15, 2007].

But to develop a comprehensive family library may I suggest a trip to the Book Village of the Catskills. The hamlet of Hobart, N.Y., located in Delaware County and with a population 370, has five local bookstores, which comes out to 74 persons per store.

All the stores cover a wide range of reading interests. Their books can be described as “Used & Rare,” there is no local Borders, and they do not sell over the Internet. Manhattan has a population of 1,500,000 and 14 general “Used & Rare” bookstores that welcome walk-in customers, which comes to 107,143 persons per store. A full-service answer is only three hours away.

‘Israel’s Army of Politics’

While it might be not as obvious in America as it is in Israel, a significant number of American presidents — George Washington, Ulysses Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and Dwight Eisenhower, to name a few — have had major roles as military commanders [Oped, “Israel’s Army of Politics,” January 23, 2007]. Hillel Halkin raises the issue of the military/politician crossover in Israel. Let’s not forget Secretaries of State Marshall, Powell, and Haig.
