‘A Republic, If You Can Keep It’
Following September 11, I was an enthusiastic support er of the war in Afghanistan Iraq. Today, after the valiant sacrifice of young American military people who never had their chance to live, to say nothing of the incredible resources being expended, I come to the sad conclusion that it is better to reduce our presence there. [Oped, “A Re public, If You Can Keep It,” March 19, 2007].
Saddam paid the price and is dead, while Osama bin Laden has disappeared in Pakistan. America cannot force peace and democracy on brainwashed Muslim populations, which for the most part hate our existence and are murdering each other in their sectarian civil wars.

‘Putin’s Test in Kosovo’
The cutline of the picture accompanying Richard Holbrooke’s oped piece [Oped, “Putin’s Test in Kosovo,” March 14, 2007] described Slovenia’s Mount Triglav as being in the Balkan Mountains. Mount Triglav is in the Alps.

Editor’s Note: The picture cutline situated Mount Triglav in the Balkans, not the Balkan Mountains. Mount Triglav is in the Julian Alps of Slovenia. Slovenia has been considered part of the Balkans, often a political and fluid term. Slovenia itself in the last decade has not cared for the Balkan label.
