‘Giving Millard Fillmore His Due’
I was disappointed that in his review of the long- and eagerly awaited biography of Millard Fillmore, Carl Rollyson failed to refer interested readers to the Millard Fillmore Society, which is entirely devoted to maintaining the memory of “America’s most mediocre president” [Arts&Letters, “Giving Millard Fillmore His Due,” April 4, 2007].
It was through the noble efforts of the society that President Carter was persuaded to send a large bouquet of pink roses to adorn Fillmore’s snow-covered grave in Buffalo on the 179th anniversary of his birth.
Perhaps Mr. Rollyson omitted mention of the Fillmore Society because memberships were closed after I was admitted some years ago and the address is now secret. Nevertheless, the struggle against Fillmore’s oblivion should not be overlooked.
