‘For Bloomberg, Small Victory Breeds Work’
As a lifetime resident of the Bronx, I applaud the leadership and foresight of New York’s elected officials on the congestion pricing deal reached this week [New York, “For Bloomberg, Small Victory Breeds Work,” July 20,2007].
With this agreement, our city and state representatives are tackling some of the urban problems our great city faces: poor environmental air quality, outdated and inadequate mass transit, and an inequitable transportation system that favors those who can afford to drive cars over those who take mass transit.
With 1 million more residents by 2030, congestion pricing is the tough love New York needs to remain a world economic leader and vibrant city.
There is no other viable solution that holistically raises revenue, improves air quality, and helps combat the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s looming financial crises.
In the global shift toward sustainability, we must address our unhealthy populace, loss of economic revenue, and failing urban infrastructure.
I urge the newly created Commission to support congestion pricing today for New York’s tomorrow.
