‘Bloomberg At His Best’
Mayor Bloomberg deserves enormous credit for standing up for immigrants [Editorial, “Bloomberg At His Best,” August 14, 2007]. He actually has a thoughtful policy platform to support his views as well.
Without immigrants, New York City wouldn’t have the prosperity we enjoy today. Instead, our population would be in decline, and we’d be losing businesses and jobs.
Welcoming and integrating immigrants into our communities has been critical to making New York City one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities. It will make our country the forward-looking, prosperous nation we all want it to be.
Thank you, Mr. Bloomberg, for defending immigrants against the simplistic, fearmongering rhetoric that currently poisons our airwaves and the public debate.
And shame on those public figures who hide behind anti-immigrant rhetoric and distance themselves from immigrants because it’s the politically convenient thing to do.
