‘The Inspiration That Was Peter Jennings’
The November 5 story in “The Knickerbocker” about “A Reporter’s Life,” the new book about Peter Jennings, reminded me of the special relationship Jennings had with the City University of New York, which revealed a side of this extraordinary journalist that the public did not always see [New York, “The Inspiration That Was Peter Jennings,” November 5, 2007].
For years, Jennings presented CUNY’s “Laurel Awards” to exemplary students who passed the GED tests through CUNY’s precollegiate preparatory programs.
What frequently made these occasions so special was that Jennings thoroughly studied each student’s biographical information in advance and spoke with great sensitivity and detail about the students and why their accomplishments were so significant. His personal observations touched and dignified each recipient; many said later that it was one of the best moments of their lives.
Today, the University is proud to confer annually a permanent scholarship in Peter Jennings’ name as a lasting tribute to the encouragement he gave to so many students.
