‘Spitzer Scores Big Victory in Senate Race’
In “Spitzer Scores Big Victory in Senate Race,” Jacob Gershman reported on the growing crisis facing Republican senators, who now control the senate by one seat [New York, February 27, 2008].
Most news stories failed to mention that the Democrat elected is pro-life and pro-school choice, while the Republican was pro-abortion rights and anti-school choice.
In New York’s suburbs, the top issue is property taxes. There are several bills addressing this issue on which Republican leader, Senator Bruno, will not allow a vote. The Education Tax Incentive Act (S.3627) is a win for everybody, as it provides tax incentives to donate to both public and private school scholarship funds.
The state tax department projects more than $500 million will be donated annually. This gets more money to our public schools and helps keep private schools open, thereby keeping property taxes down.
Since Mr. Bruno decided to side with the teacher unions who oppose any bill that helps keep private schools open, I think it’s time for conservatives to run our own Senate candidates, just as we did in the party’s early years. At least then the conservative party will be seen as standing for something, other than patronage.
