At its winter benefit Monday night, Manhattan Theatre Club presented a night of romance.
The sweeping views of the city from the windows of the Rainbow Room helped set the mood, as did the event’s lovely co-chairwomen: Bethany Millard, who wore a Kim Hicks gold lace gown with a blue ribbon sweetly draping over one shoulder, and Fiona Kirk, who sizzled in a backless dress.
The meal of tuna tartare and osso buco moved things along, until hearts went a-thumping during the musical performances of two dynamic duos: Sutton Foster and David Hyde Pierce, who had never performed together before, and Jessica Molaskey and her husband, John Pizzarelli, who perform together often, but always seem to be discovering one another all over again. Both pairings charmed the audience of 300 patrons, including many couples who held hands and exchanged glances during the performance.
The event, which raised $600,000, sure did deliver on its promise for “An Intimate Night.” In the end, though, the event also told another, more important story: that of the love affair a certain group of New Yorkers has for a certain theater company. “We’ve been with MTC since the beginning,” a patron, Sid Lerner, said of his and his wife’s relationship with the 38-year-old company, which is currently presenting a revival of “Come Back, Little Sheba” at the Biltmore Theater.
Attendees included the chief executive of Pfizer, Jeffrey Kindler, who is a Manhattan Theatre Club board member; the president of Bloomberg LP, Daniel Doctoroff, who is so far loving his new job, which he started Thursday; the daughter of Colin Powell, actress Linda Powell, and set designer John Lee Beatty, who is working on the San Diego tryout of a new musical, “Dancing in the Dark,” based on the movie “The Band Wagon.”
