Chefs and tennis players all know how to serve, but at last night’s Evian Taste of Tennis, it was the chefs who got to show off.

“He cooks, I eat,” said Andy Roddick as chef-cum-celebrity Emeril Lagasse made chicken and sausage gumbo.

Throughout the evening, chef-player pairs offered sustenance to a crowd of tanned advertising and financial types.

Chanda Rubin, who played doubles with Venus Williams on the U.S. Olympic tennis team, said she was “the cheerleader” for the chef of Icon, Brian Wieler, who prepared grape leaf-wrapped shrimp. Ms. Rubin is hoping to improve her kitchen (and cooking) skills back home in Louisiana.

Lovebird tennis pros Jenny Hopkins and Taylor Dent – who’ve been dating for four years since meeting at an Adidas player’s party – are learning how to cook. “She cooks well,” Mr. Dent said. “No, no, I don’t,” countered Ms. Hopkins. On the courts, they’re both moving up the rankings nicely.

Amer Delic of Jacksonville, Fla.. made his grand slam debut at the 2003 U.S. Open. Last night was his debut as baker’s apprentice to Wendy Israel, who served strawberry white chocolate mousse cake.

Player Robert Kendrick passed around seafood rolls made by Riingo’s Johan Svensson. Unfortunately, Mr. Kendrick couldn’t sample them; he’s allergic to shellfish. He prefers grilled chicken with a side of Ranch.
