The Most Devoted Patrons …
The membership group for the New York Public Library’s most generous supporters, the President’s Council, gathered Monday for a panel on “Pleasure.”
“By far the greatest pleasure for me has been reading because without books you’re stuck with life,” writer Fran Lebowitz said.
André Leon Talley spoke of being around beautiful clothes; the proprietor of La Grenouille, Charles Masson, said he finds pleasure by giving it. Therapist Esther Perel said pleasure can be unexpected.
The most obvious pleasure of the night was simply being in the library, sipping cocktails in the Trustee’s Room, and dining on chicken potpie in Astor Hall amid clusters of red roses.

The membership group for families at the New York Public Library, the Cubs, gathered Saturday for the kind of fun the library offers year-round to more than 5 million children. Young guests enjoyed a puppet show and pizzas with cat faces while adults browsed a list of items wanted by local branches, such as bright storytime area rugs, wall clocks, and Miss Spider prints.
