WHEN PIGS FLY Modernist painter Milton Avery (1885-1965) painted the illustrations in the exhibit “Milton Avery: The Flying Pig and Other Winged Creatures” at the encouragement of his friend Mark Rothko. Avery created the works to accompany a text by children’s author Karla Kuskin. The story features a flying pink pig, a giant caterpillar, a singing cat, and a young boy. The works in the exhibit, which include dry points, woodcuts, and gouache paintings, will be on view through Friday. Also on display at the New York Public Library: a selection of drawings by macabre master Charles Addams (through June 25). HER HIGHNESS IN HIGH SCHOOL Meg Cabot reads from “Princess in Training” (HarperCollins), the sixth book in “The Princess Diaries” young-adult series about a plucky royal in training. MOONSTRUCK Astronaut Buzz Aldrin discusses and signs “Reaching for the Moon” (HarperCollins), his new children’s book about his childhood and preparation for space travel. The young boy who loved collecting rocks became the primary collector of moon rocks during the Apollo 11 mission. DAHESH DAY The Dahesh Museum’s summer festival for children celebrates “academic art of the 19th century in a less-than-academic setting.” The event includes storytelling, scavenger hunts, and art projects. CRIME AND CAKE The Rattle and Reel program at Sunshine Theater welcomes caregivers and babies to a weekly screening of one of the theater’s arty first-run films.
