1. TOP BROKER ACCUSED OF TAX EVASION
A top real estate broker at Brown Harris Stevens who helped sell more than $1 billion worth of New York City property, Kathy Sloane, is under investigation for allegedly evading state taxes, the New York Post reported. Ms. Sloane, 62, who helped President and Senator Clinton buy homes in Chappaqua, Westchester County, and Washington, D.C., was among 31 brokers who allegedly evaded taxes for more than three years. Ms. Sloane is due back in an Albany court on April 4. She is not likely to face felony charges, her attorney said.
2. TWIST IN LINDA STEIN CASE
Defense lawyers in the murder trial of high-profile broker Linda Stein are pointing to new blood evidence that suggests an unidentified male may have been the murderer. Her personal assistant, Natavia Lowery, confessed to the murder, although her lawyers are now claiming her confession was coerced.
3 DISGRACED MEMOIRIST BUYS SOHO CONDO
Writer James Frey has closed a deal on a $985,000 one-bedroom apartment situated next door to his current three-bedroom condo in SoHo, the New York Observer reported. Mr. Frey and his wife, Maya, closed on the first apartment in May 2005, six months after his two best-selling memoirs were exposed as being heavily embellished.
4. ATLANTIC YARDS COULD FACE DELAYS
The slumping economy and lack of interest from anchor tenants is likely to delay the multibillion-dollar Atlantic Yards project for several years, the developer Bruce Ratner told the New York Times. Mr. Ratner has yet to secure an anchor tenant for the Miss Brooklyn office tower, originally slated for completion in July 2009. Construction on the tower will not proceed until a tenant is found, he said.
5. ACTOR’S HOTEL TO OPEN IN APRIL
After months of construction, actor Robert DeNiro’s 88-room luxury Greenwich Hotel in TriBeCa is scheduled to open April 1, the Real Deal reported. The hotel will feature 13 suites, two duplex suites, and a penthouse with a kitchen, dining room, media complex, and views of the Hudson River.
6. UNION SQUARE PAVILION PLAN GOES FORWARD
The Bloomberg administration is forging ahead with its 4-year-old plan to build a new restaurant in the historic pavilion at Union Square, despite objections by residents who are calling for a cultural center or noncommercial space, Metro reported. While vowing to seek input from the local community board, city Department of Parks and Recreation officials have already applied for the building permits to construct a seasonal café open six months a year.
