Andruw Jones hit a pair of two-run homers, Kyle Davies pitched a three-hitter for his first career complete game, and the Atlanta Braves slowed down the Mets with a 7-1 victory last night.
Adam LaRoche also homered off Victor Zambrano and drove in three runs, helping the Braves bounce back from a 4-3 loss to Pedro Martinez in the series opener. Tim Hudson faces Tom Glavine in the finale today.
Davies (1-1) shut down a depleted Mets lineup that was missing three injured starters: center fielder Carlos Beltran, left fielder Cliff Floyd, and rookie second baseman Anderson Hernandez.
The 22-year-old right-hander struck out six and walked one in his 17th major league start. He threw 77 of 106 pitches for strikes and retired his final 10 batters in a game that lasted only 2 hours, 9 minutes.
Davies yielded only a third-inning homer to Chris Woodward and rebounded from a 7-6 loss to Philadelphia in his previous outing. Davies had lost four straight decisions dating to last season.
Booed all night by the crowd of 30,322, Zambrano (1-1) gave up seven runs – all with two outs – and seven hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out four.
The Mets still own the best record in the majors at 10-3.
Jones has four homers in his last three games and 22 RBI already this season. He and LaRoche each finished with three hits.
With Chipper Jones – and new shortstop Edgar Renteria – down again right now, Andruw Jones is turning it up once more.
Zambrano got in trouble almost immediately. He struck out Andruw Jones with runners at second and third in the first, but LaRoche followed with a two out, two-run double to left.
Jones hit a two-run shot to center with two outs in the third, and LaRoche followed with his fourth homer of the year to make it 5-0.
Woodward connected leading off the bottom half, but the Mets never got close. In the fifth, Jones drove an 0-2 pitch from Zambrano over the left-field fence for another two-run shot and a 7-1 cushion.
Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, ending his 11-game hitting streak.
Beltran did not start for the third straight game because of tightness in his right hamstring, but he doesn’t think he’ll need to go on the disabled list.
“I feel better than yesterday. I have a little bit of a bruise. It’s good to see the bruise coming out. That means it’s healing,” Beltran said.
He rode the exercise bike and thinks warmer weather would speed up the healing process.
Floyd sat out after straining a muscle in his left rib cage Monday night. He received treatment yesterday and hopes to play today against Atlanta.
“I feel OK. I just have to be smart and not push this thing,” Floyd said.
Manager Willie Randolph wants to be careful with his two ailing sluggers.
“It’s early and there’s no reason to rush [Floyd] at this time. Same thing with Beltran,” Randolph said. “I don’t think it’s a DL situation. That’s why you take an extra day.
“They might be ready tomorrow,” he added. “The team’s doing well. This is a chance to play some of the other guys.”
