MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Federica Pellegrini of Italy broke the world record in the women’s 200-meter freestyle at the world swimming championships Tuesday night.
It was the fourth world record of the night, with Americans Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin and Aaron Peirsol setting the others in finals.
Ms. Pellegrini was timed in 1 minute, 56.47 seconds in the 200 free semifinals. That bettered the old mark of 1:56.64 by Franziska Van Almsick of Germany set in August 2002 at Berlin.
An amazed Ms. Pellegrini put her hands to her lips, then raised her arms skyward in celebration. She advanced to Wednesday’s final.
