MONTREAL – Tom Glavine won for just the third time since mid-June, and Gerald Williams and Victor Diaz homered to lead the Mets over the Montreal Expos 4-2 last night.

Glavine (10-13) allowed six hits – including a double and a pair of solo homers to Brad Wilkerson – in 6 1 /3 innings to improve to 3-1 against Montreal this year. He was 2-10 in his previous 16 starts since June 13, beating the Expos on June 27 and Los Angeles on August 27.

Glavine has 261 victories, trailing only 300-game winners Roger Clemens and Greg Maddux among active pitchers.

Braden Looper pitched the ninth for his 27th save in 32 chances and second in two nights.

The Mets moved three games ahead of last-place Montreal in the NL East. The Expos, who moved within one game of tying the Mets with a 6-1 win Tuesday, have been last in the division since April 15.

A discount ticket and hot dog promotion drew 11,142 fans after each of the first two games of the series drew less than 4,000.

Diaz hit his first career homer off Tomo Ohka (3-6) with one out in the fourth to put the Mets up 2-1.

Glavine doubled leading off the fifth and Williams hit a towering drive over the left-field wall to make it 4-1.

Wilkerson went 3-for-4 and tied Tony Batista for the team lead with 31 homers when he connected in the fifth inning to make it 4-2.

Wilkerson homered with one out in the third to give Montreal two 30-home run hitters in the same season for the first time in franchise history.

Ohka allowed eight hits and four runs in five innings. After he fought out of a jam in the first when he allowed back-to-back one-out singles to Jeff Keppinger and David Wright, Ohka got into trouble right away again in the second when he hit Diaz with a pitch and Jason Phillips singled.

Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Wilson Delgado hit a run scoring grounder to short to drive in the Mets’ first run.

Wilkerson tied it in the third as he joined Rusty Staub and Henry Rodriguez to become just the third left-handed batter in Expos history to reach 30 homers.

Mike Cameron missed his second straight start because of a strained left wrist tendon.
