UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Alexei Yashin had a goal and recorded his 400th NHL assist last night and backup Wade Dubielewicz stopped all three Pittsburgh skaters in the shootout, lifting the Is landers to a 4-3 victory over the Penguins.

The Penguins, who lost for the 11th time in 12 games, tied it on John LeClair’s goal with 26.6 seconds left in regulation, and they did it with Sidney Crosby in the penalty box.

LeClair got to a bouncing puck in front and whacked it in out of the air on the Penguins’ 15th shot.

But Dubielewicz stopped Michel Ouellet, Crosby, and Ryan Malone to help the Islanders break a three-game losing streak.

Yashin, the Islanders’ captain, scored a power-play goal on a deflection in the first period – when New York had a 14-3 edge in shots – then helped set up Miroslav Satan for another man-advantage goal in the second. Oleg Kvasha gave New York a 3-1 lead 2:24 into the final period.

That was enough to knock off the Penguins, who played their second game since Mario Lemieux retired.

The Islanders improved to 3-3-1 since Brad Shaw took over for fired coach Steve Stirling. Dubielewicz made 13 saves in place of regular starter Rick DiPietro, who watched from the bench. DiPietro was pulled in the second period of the Islanders 4-0 loss to New Jersey on Tuesday after giving up all the goals on 17 shots.

Pittsburgh had only eight shots through two periods. But the Penguins trailed 3-2 when Mark Recchi deflected in defenseman Sergei Gonchar’s drive 1:21 after Kvasha extended the Islanders’ lead.

That was the Penguins’ ninth shot and the second to get past Dubielewicz. The first was scored by newly acquired defenseman Eric Cairns, brought to Pittsburgh mainly to protect Crosby.

Cairns, who played the previous six seasons with the Islanders, scored his 10th NHL goal in his sixth game with the Penguins. Cairns’s last goal came 74 games earlier, on December 6, 2003, while with New York. He received a warm round of applause from the crowd, more used to hearing his name announced following fights.

The Penguins were a little unlucky as Guillaume Lefebvre and LeClair hit posts behind Dubielewicz in the second period.

The Islanders grabbed the early lead when Jason Blake’s pass hit the heel of Yashin’s stick, and deflected off the post and goalie Sebastien Caron’s skate before trickling in.

It became 2-0 after Yashin’s shot was swept aside by Caron, who moved it right to Satan for an easy tap-in while New York was on a 5-on-3 advantage.

Crosby – who had a career-best four points Wednesday – and Recchi set up Cairns at 9:26 of the second. Caron, subbing for Marc-Andre Fleury, made 28 saves.

In Tampa, Ruslan Fedotenko scored with 2:38 left in overtime, giving the Tampa Bay Lightning a 1-0 victory over New Jersey and spoiling another stellar outing by Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur.

John Grahame had 20 saves en route to his third shutout in Tampa Bay’s last five games. The Lightning is 4-0-1 during that stretch, and Grahame has allowed a total of one goal in the four victories.

The loss was just the second in 12 games for the Devils, who entered as the NHL’s hottest team with Brodeur posting four shutouts during a stretch that’s propelled the club into postseason contention.

Fedotenko snapped the scoreless tie, taking a pass from Nolan Pratt in the lower right circle and flicking the puck past Brodeur less than two minutes after the goalie stopped Vincent Lecavalier from point-blank range to keep the Devils in the game.

Brodeur, who stopped 32 shots before Fedotenko’s winner, was coming off a 4-0 victory over the Islanders on Tuesday night. The 33-year-old goaltender twisted his left knee during the first period of that game, but remained in net and finished with his 79th career shutout.

The Lightning outshot the Devils 13-3 in the opening period and saw an opportunity to take the lead slip away in the second when Martin St. Louis hit the post from point-blank range on a short-handed breakaway.

New Jersey was 0-for-5 on the power play, failing to convert on three opportunities in the second period and one more in the third, when it appeared a hooking penalty against Pavel Kubina might cost Tampa Bay the game.

Devils right wing Grant Marshall (pinched neck nerve) returned after missing one game. Rangers defenseman Darius Kasparaitis elbowed Marshall in the head last Sunday.

Lightning coach John Tortorella said a new team captain to replace the departed Dave Andreychuk won’t be named until next season. “That’s more out of respect to David,” Tortorella said. Andreychuk was waived January 10.
