Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer off struggling Tom Glavine, and Bobby Abreu had four RBI to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 10-3 rout of the Mets last night.
Brett Myers struck out 10 in seven sharp innings for the last place Phillies, who busted out on offense after putting All-Star slugger Jim Thome and speedy centerfielder Kenny Lofton on the disabled list earlier in the day.
Philadelphia, which entered ranked 15th out of 16 NL teams in slugging percentage (.363), won for only the fifth time in 14 games.
Cliff Floyd was the lone bright spot for the Mets, connecting for his seventh home run to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 19 games – longest in the majors this year.
New York looked tired after winning a night game Sunday in Washington, then waiting out a rain delay of 2 hours, 17 minutes before Pedro Martinez beat the Phillies 5-1 Monday night.
The Mets pulled a handful of regulars after the seventh, leaving the Shea Stadium crowd of 17,051 with little to do but cheer Jose Reyes’s first walk of the season, which forced in a run in the ninth.
Myers (2-1) allowed just four hits and walked one, throwing 73 of 108 pitches for strikes in his latest impressive performance. Off to a terrific start in his third full season, he has given up only six earned runs in six outings.
Glavine (1-4) walked six in 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs – seven earned – and six hits. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has walked 22 batters in 30 2/3 innings this season. He has given up 14 earned runs in his last two starts.
Jimmy Rollins doubled to open the game, and Abreu walked one out later. Burrell then sent a 3-2 pitch over the left-field bleachers and into Philadelphia’s bullpen for his sixth homer of the season.
It was his 27th career homer against the Mets. He also has 73 RBI against New York since his major league debut in 2000.
Abreu added a two-run single in the second and a two-run single in the fourth. David Bell and Tomas Perez each had an RBI single.
The Phillies placed Thome (strained lower back) and Lofton (strained right hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled first baseman Ryan Howard and outfielder Marlon Byrd from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Martinez and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz received their 2004 World Series rings from Boston Red Sox chairman Tom Werner before the game.
