CINK TAKES NEC IN A WALK Six days after being named to the U.S. Ryder Cup team, Stewart Cink completed the best performance of his career by turning the final round of the NEC Invitational into a showcase of poise and putting. He never let anyone within two shots of the lead to become the first wire-to-wire winner on the PGA Tour this year.

Cink finished at 11-under 269 for the tournament and earned $1.2 million for his first World Golf Championship title. He had been 0-6 in his career when he had a lead going into the final round of a tournament.

Tiger Woods bogeyed the first hole and never got closer than five shots, finishing with a 69 on the day. He did manage to maintain his streak of 263 consecutive weeks at no. 1 in the world.

Vijay Singh and Ernie Els had a chance to surpass him this week, but both had letdowns after a grueling week at the PGA Championship. Singh, who won the PGA, shot 70 in the final round and tied for 32nd. Els never broke par all week, and closed with a 72, tied for 65th.

JACKSONVILLE RELEASES BRACKENS The Jacksonville Jaguars released defensive end Tony Brackens yesterday because the team’s all-time sack leader struggled this preseason with the latest in a string of leg injuries.

Brackens, 29, had been released once already this year for salary-cap reasons but was signed again to a one-year contract in June. He is coming back from right knee surgery, a year after having complicated surgery on the other knee.

He led the team last year with six sacks.

HEWITT CRUISES TO LEGG MASON TITLE Lleyton Hewitt beat the Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-4 yesterday in the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. The second-seeded Australian became the fifth player this year with at least three ATP Tour titles. His other victories came in Sydney and Rotterdam.

Muller eliminated top-seeded Andre Agassi on Saturday to reach his first final but struggled to handle the early pressure applied by Hewitt.

CUBS MUST REPAIR WRIGLEY The protective netting in place to protect fans from falling concrete at Wrigley Field must be replaced with a permanent solution if the Cubs want to play at the stadium next spring, a city official said.

Building Commissioner Stan Kaderbek said that the most recent inspections at the 90-year-old ballpark had not uncovered any surprises, although the city will not decide until noon today on whether the Cubs can play their home game tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Chunks of concrete have fallen from Wrigley’s upper deck on at least three occasions since June.

SOCCER

ARSENAL’S UNBEATEN STREAK TIES RECORD Arsenal equaled Nottingham Forest’s 42-match unbeaten league record in heart-stopping style yesterday when the Premier League champions roared back from 3-1 down to beat Middlesbrough 5-3. Arsenal has not lost in the league since May 2003.
