WINSLOW WILL MISS REST OF SEASON

Browns rookie tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. needs a second operation on his right leg and will miss the remainder of this season.

Winslow, who broke his fibula during a loss on September 19 in Dallas, will have surgery today to stabilize ligaments.

Last week, the first-round draft pick had screws and plates inserted to stabilize the fracture, which was clean through the bone. Following the surgery, Cleveland coach Butch Davis reported that doctors found no ligament damage and said there was a good chance Winslow would be back in November.

But after evaluating Winslow, team doctors decided he needed more surgery.

MCNAIR LEAVES HOSPITAL

Titans quarterback Steve Mc-Nair was released from the hospital yesterday morning after a two-night stay with a bruised sternum.

McNair was injured late in Tennessee’s 15-12 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday. A team spokesman said McNair was resting at home. The 2003 co-MVP got hurt at the end of a 5-yard run when Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud came down on McNair’s back. Coach Jeff Fisher said McNair will be listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against San Diego.

CANDLESTICK BECOMES A MONSTER

The San Francisco 49ers announced yesterday a four-year agreement with Monster Cable Products Inc. that will change Candlestick Park’s name to Monster Park. Many of the signs around the stadium will be updated in time for Sunday night’s home game against St. Louis.

The 49ers, who have started the season 0-3, and the city will split the proceeds evenly, with each getting at least $3 million. Monster and 49ers officials would not release the exact amount of the winning bid.

BEARS SIGN HUTCHINSON TO REPLACE GROSSMAN

The Chicago Bears signed former Dallas quarterback Chad Hutchinson to a two-year contract yesterday as insurance after Rex Grossman was lost for the season with a knee injury.

Grossman, who started the first three games this season and the final three a year ago, was placed on injured reserve yesterday. After surgery, he will need seven to 10 months of rehab.
