SINGH BECOMES GOLF’S FIRST $10 MILLION MAN

Vijay Singh made birdies on the first two holes, closed with a 6-under 65, and won by five shots for his ninth victory of the year at the Chrysler Championship yesterday.

Singh joined Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Paul Runyan, and Tiger Woods as the only players with at least nine wins in a year, and, more important, became the first golfer ever to make $10 million on tour in a year.

Singh won $900,000 to push his season earnings to $10,725,166, a staggering amount considering it took him eight years and 173 starts on the PGA Tour before making $10 million for his career.

He finished in style, hitting out of a fairway bunker to 15 feet and making that for birdie. Singh finished at 18-under 266 to break the record set in 2002 by K.J. Choi by one shot.

JOHANSSON DOWNS AGASSI IN STOCKHOLM FINAL

Andre Agassi lost the Stockholm Open final in a third-set tiebreaker to Sweden’s Thomas Johansson, who won 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 yesterday to capture this tournament for the second time.

It was Johansson’s eighth ATP singles title. He won the Australian Open in 2002, his best season.

Agassi, who didn’t lose a set in four matches entering the final, was making his first final appearance in the Stockholm Open, one of the world’s oldest indoor tournaments.

MOLIK WINS SECOND STRAIGHT TITLE AT SEAT OPEN

Alicia Molik of Australia won her second straight title yesterday, defeating Dinara Safina of Russia 6-3, 6-4 in the SEAT Open final.

Molik, seeded second and ranked no. 14, has three titles this year and four for her career. A bronze medalist at the Athens Olympics, Molik broke the Russian in the eighth game before serving out the first set. She got another break in the sixth game of the second set. Molik won in Zurich a week ago with a three set victory over Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova. Her other title this year came in Stockholm, Sweden.
