MOGILNY TO RETURN TO NEW JERSEY

Alexander Mogilny, the right winger who earned a Stanley Cup ring with New Jersey, signed a two-year contract yesterday night to return to the Devils. Mogilny came to the Devils late in the 1999-2000 season and helped New Jersey to its second championship with four goals and three assists in the playoffs. He came back strong the following season and had the third best offensive year of his career, posting 43 goals and 83 points in 75 games.

The following season, Mogilny left for Toronto, where he was limited to just 37 games during the 2003-04 regular season following a second operation on his arthritic left hip. There were reports that he might quit playing, but the 36-year-old said he never considered retirement.

LAVIOLETTE NAMED 2006 OLYMPIC HOCKEY COACH

Carolina Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette was chosen yesterday as coach of the 2006 U.S. Olympic team that will compete in the Turin Games next February. Laviolette, a two-time Olympian who captained the squad at the 1994 games, is 97-94-25 in two-plus seasons as an NHL head coach with Carolina and the New York Islanders. Laviolette coached the U.S. squad to the bronze medal in the 2004 world championships, a finish that earned the Americans a spot in the 2006 Olympics.

TAMPA BAY RE-SIGNS LECAVALIER

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed center Vincent Lecavalier to a four-year deal yesterday, keeping a key piece of their Stanley Cup championship team. The Lightning could have lost the 25-year-old star next off-season if he became an unrestricted free agent.

WILLIAMS STRUGGLES TO VICTORY IN RETURN TO COURT

Serena Williams rallied from a rocky start to defeat France’s Stephanie Cohen-Aloro 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 last night in the second round of the $1.3 million Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto. The fifth-seeded American, who hasn’t played since Wimbledon because of an injured left ankle, struggled with her mobility on the court. She often failed to get to balls well within her reach and appeared to be favoring her left leg off and on throughout the match. With the U.S. Open just over two weeks away, Williams is using this event as a much-needed tuneup for the final Grand Slam of the season.

HOLYFIELD BARRED FROM FIGHTING IN NEW YORK

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield was barred from fighting in New York by the state’s athletic commission because of “poor performance and diminished skills” in recent fights. The three-member commission decided unanimously to suspend Holyfield’s boxing license indefinitely after consultations with its chief medical officer.

The commission had placed Holyfield (38-2-2) on an indefinite medical suspension in November, three days after he lost a unanimous 12-round decision to Larry Donald. Holyfield, the only four-time heavyweight champion, has two wins in his last nine fights. He says he wants to win the title for a fifth time.

BONDS SAYS HE MIGHT COME BACK IN SEPTEMBER

Barry Bonds now says there’s a good chance he could play for the San Francisco Giants this season because his bad knee is doing better.

“Two weeks ago things didn’t look too promising, but the past 10 days my rehab has taken a turn for the better,” he wrote in a new entry on his Web site.” My strength and endurance have increased and my knee is feeling much better. There is a good possibility that I could be back in September with the team, but, if not, I will definitely be in the 2006 lineup,” he wrote.
