GIANTS PLACE GREEN ON INJURED RESERVE
Linebacker Barrett Green was placed on injured reserve yesterday by the Giants. Green started nine games in 2004 but missed most of the rest of the season with knee and ankle injuries. He had surgery in January and appeared in one game this season. His ankle had been bothering him recently, and he underwent tests this week.
To fill Green’s spot on the roster, the Giants signed defensive end Alonzo Jackson, a third-year pro out of Florida State who spent 2003 and 2004 with Pittsburgh and appeared in one game with Philadelphia this season.
The Giants linebacking corps could also be without starter Carlos Emmons for Sunday’s game against Washington. An MRI this week revealed that Emmons has a slight tear in his right pectoral muscle, the linebacker said. Emmons did not practice yesterday.
Wide receiver Plaxico Burress, the team’s leading receiver with 30 catches, also missed practice with a sore right shoulder he injured in the final moments of Sunday’s win over Denver. Burress and Emmons are both considered day-to-day, as is wide receiver David Tyree, who missed practice with an elbow injury.

KRZYZEWSKI NAMED COACH OF NATIONAL TEAM
Two weeks after it was widely reported, USA Basketball made Duke University head coach Mike Krzyzewski the coach of the men’s senior national team.
The man who has led Duke to three national championships will be in charge of the U.S. national program for the next three years, a span that includes the World Championships in Japan in 2006 and the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He is the first college coach to lead a U.S. team in a major international competition since NBA players started playing in the Olympics in 1992. Krzyzewski served as an assistant to head coach Chuck Daly in 1992, and he was the head coach in the 1990 World Championships when a team of college players finished third.
The move was initiated by Jerry Colangelo, the CEO of the Phoenix Suns who was appointed managing director of the national team in April. It followed a two-year run when the Americans finished sixth in the World Championships in Indianapolis in 2002 and third at the Athens Olympics last year.
HORNETS TRADE MAGLOIRE TO BUCKS FOR MASON
The New Orleans Hornets traded center Jamaal Magloire to the Milwaukee Bucks yesterday in exchange for forward Desmond Mason, an unconditional first-round pick in the 2006 draft, and cash. Magloire, an All-Star two seasons ago, averaged 11.7 points and 7.4 rebounds in 23 games for the Hornets last season. The 6-foot-11 center missed 51 games last season with a broken right ring finger. He had expressed a desire to be traded to Toronto, his hometown.
Mason, a 6-foot-5 forward from Oklahoma State, averaged 17.2 points in 80 games for the Bucks last season. A first-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2000, Mason will be returning to familiar territory with the Hornets, who will play 35 of their home games in Oklahoma City this season after being forced out of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.
Bucks general manager Larry Harris said he approached the Hornets about a deal because of nagging knee injuries to forwards Joe Smith and Dan Gadzuric that exposed the Bucks’ thin ranks along the frontcourt.

CHARLTON BUMPS CHELSEA FROM LEAGUE CUP
Bryan Hughes converted the final penalty and Charlton knocked defending champion Chelsea out of the English League Cup, winning 5-4 in the shootout tiebreaker yesterday after a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. It was Chelsea’s first loss of the season after nine wins and a draw in the Premier League and two victories and a draw in the Champions League.
The loss comes a day after Crystal Palace upset Liverpool 2-1 and leaves the tournament without either of last season’s finalists. Manchester United, Newcastle, Bolton, and Middlesbrough also made it to the last 16. United beat League Three Barnet 4-1, Newcastle won 1-0 at League Two Grimsby, Bolton edged West Ham 1-0, and Middlesbrough won 1-0 at Everton.
