Buckeyes, Trojans Top First BCS Poll
Ohio State, USC, and Michigan topped the first Bowl Championship Series standings released yesterday, putting the Big Ten powers and the Trojans in control of the national title race.
The firstplace Buckeyes and third-place Wolverines play in Columbus on November 18. If they can avoid an upset before then, the winner of that game is all but assured a spot in the BCS title game.
Second-place USC has the toughest part of its schedule ahead of it, but if the Trojans remain unbeaten they’ll most likely play in a third straight championship game.
The top two teams in the final BCS standings will meet January 8 in the title game in Glendale, Ariz., that will also be the site of the Fiesta Bowl. For the first time, the BCS title game will played about a week after the four major bowls — the Rose, Orange, Fiesta, and Sugar.
Suspensions Handed Out After Miami Brawl
At least eight Miami players will be suspended for their role in a sidelineclearing brawl against Florida International, the latest on-field incident to plague the Hurricanes’ program. The fight — “disgraceful,” Miami coach Larry Coker said — came during Miami’s 35–0 win Saturday night over FIU.
Five of the eight suspended Miami players — offensive linemen Derrick Morse and Chris Barney, running back Charlie Jones, and cornerbacks Carlos Armour and Bruce Johnson — were ejected from the game, drawing automatic suspensions. After reviewing tape of the incident, Coker decided to suspend safeties Anthony Reddick and Brandon Meriweather and halfback James Bryant. The lengths of the suspensions have not been determined.
It’s the third on-field incident involving the Hurricanes in their last seven games.
