Delgado Wins Roberto Clemente Award

When Carlos Delgado was growing up in Puerto Rico, he learned all about the legacy of Roberto Clemente and idolized the late Hall of Fame outfielder.

That’s why it meant so much to Delgado to win the 2006 Roberto Clemente Award, given to the major league player who best combines community service with excellence on the field.

“This is a great honor for me,” the Mets’ first baseman said yesterday before Game 3 of the World Series between the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. “This is something really special, just because I’m Puerto Rican — 34 years after Roberto has passed, his legacy is still very much alive.”

Clemson’s Bowden Says Davis Probable For Virginia Tech

Clemson’s latest injury could be the toughest for the Tigers to overcome.

Atlantic Coast Conference leadingrusher James Davis could miss tomorrow night’s game at Virginia Tech with a shoulder injury, though coach Tommy Bowden was encouraged by what he saw from the running back in practice yesterday.

After practice, Bowden said Davis was probable for Virginia Tech. Earlier in the day he said Davis was “50–50” to play. Davis hurt his shoulder in the 10th-ranked Tigers’ 31–7 victory over Georgia Tech last Saturday.

Michigan Receiver Arrington Charged With Domestic Violence

Michigan wide receiver Adrian Arrington has been charged with misdemeanor domestic violence, stemming from an alleged argument with his girlfriend.

Arrington, 20, was arraigned last week in district court and a pretrial hearing is set for November 1. If convicted, Arrington could face up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.

According to the police report, officers responded to a call from Arrington’s girlfriend, Jodie Hupe, about 3 a.m on October 13. Hupe said she picked up Arrington from a bar and they got into an argument. Arrington grabbed Hupe’s keys, pushed her out of the vehicle and drove off, the report said.

Abraham Expected To Miss 3-4 Weeks Following Surgery

The Atlanta Falcons’ defensive end, John Abraham, will miss three to four weeks following surgery yesterday to repair a torn lower abdominal muscle.

The Falcons did not release details on the procedure, but coach Jim Mora said the torn muscle “is related to but not solely linked to”the groin injury that has limited the oft-injured three-time Pro Bowler to only two games this season.

Abraham, acquired from the Jets during the off-season for a first-round draft pick, enjoyed a successful debut in Atlanta. He was named NFC defensive player of the week after having six tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one pass batted away in the Falcons’ 20–6 win at Carolina.

Carthon Out, Davidson In, As Browns Make Offensive Change

With Cleveland’s season spiraling downward, the coach of the Cleveland Browns, Romeo Crennel, accepted Maurice Carthon’s resignation as offensive coordinator Monday night, one day after the Browns scored just seven points in a loss to Denver.

The Browns (1–5) have the NFL’s lowest-ranked offense and Carthon made some head-scratching play calls and personnel decisions, infuriating Cleveland’s fans and frustrating its players.

Crennel said Carthon, in his second year running the Browns’ offense, came into his office and said he wanted out.
