Rogers, Pudge, Jeter Among AL Gold Glove Winners

After all those errors in the World Series, a Detroit Tigers pitcher whose smudged left hand created a lot of suspicion during the World Series, Kenny Rogers, won his fourth straight Gold Glove yesterday and fifth overall.

Rogers’s teammate Ivan Rodriguez won his 12th Gold Glove, extending his record for catchers. Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, Minnesota center fielder Torii Hunter, and Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez won the awards for the sixth straight season.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Toronto center fielder Vernon Wells won for the third time in a row, Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira won for the second consecutive season and Kansas City second baseman Mark Grudzielanek was a first-time winner.

“The Gold GloveAward means a great deal to me,” Jeter said in a statement. “Fielding doesn’t get many headlines, but it’s a big part of the game of baseball. I take great pride in my defense.”

NL Gold Glove winners will be announced Friday.

Dombrowski To Lead Tigers Through 2011

After turning around the Detroit Tigers during his first five seasons, Dave Dombrowski was given a fouryear contract extension yesterday that runs through 2011.

Dombrowski, the team’s general manager, president and chief executive officer, helped lead the team this year to its first playoff appearance since 1984.

Garrard To Start Sunday For Jaguars

David Garrard will make his second consecutive start at quarterback in place of Byron Leftwich Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars host Tennessee.

Leftwich said yesterday that coach Jack Del Rio told him before practice he was sticking with Garrard, who led the Jaguars to a 13–6 victory at Philadelphia last week and improved to 5–1 as a starter the past two seasons.

“All I know is that I was told I won’t be the starter on Sunday,” Leftwich said. “So now is the time to get the ankle healthy. But me personally, I’d be lying to you if I said I couldn’t start. I feel I could go out there and play well, but we’ll see.”

Del Rio has repeatedly said that Leftwich, if healthy, would be the starter. Leftwich declared himself healthy enough to play earlier this week and said he practiced without pain Wednesday.

Renowned Track Coach Indicted in Steroid Scandal

The elite track coach who trained Justin Gatlin, Marion Jones, and Tim Montgomery was charged yesterday with hindering the federal steroids probe he helped launch three years ago when he mailed a syringe of a designer drug to anti-doping agents.

Trevor Graham was charged with three counts of making false statements to federal agents in an indictment issued by the grand jury investigating performance-enhancing drugs in professional sports.

If convicted, Graham faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $750,000 fine. He was summoned to appear for arraignment November 16 in U.S. District Court.

Graham operates the Raleigh, N.C.-based Sprint Capitol USA, a team of about 10 athletes that includes Gatlin, the 100-meter co-world record holder who tested positive for testosterone and other steroids in April.

Panthers’ Bertuzzi Has Back Surgery, Out 6–8 Weeks

The Florida Panthers’ wing, Todd Bertuzzi underwent lower back surgery yesterday, and the timetable for his return is uncertain.

Sidelined for more than two weeks by a herniated disc, Bertuzzi will be re-evaluated Monday, the team said. He had surgery after injections failed to help.

Bertuzzi has a goal and six assists in seven games. He was acquired June 23 in a trade that sent goaltender Roberto Luongo.
