A’S REWARD GM BEANE WITH 7-YEAR EXTENSION
Athletics general manager Billy Beane, the architect behind Oakland’s four division titles since 2000, was rewarded with a sevenyear contract extension Wednesday.
Team president Michael Crowley also received a seven-year extension from A’s owner and managing partner Lew Wolff, who lauded both men for their work with the club.
The A’s reached the AL championship series last season, getting swept in four games by the Detroit Tigers.

TONEY TESTS POSITIVE FOR STEROIDS
Three-time champion James Toney tested positive for steroids and could face a one-year suspension from boxing.
Armando Garcia, the California State Athletic Commission’s executive officer, said Toney and Danny Batchelder, his opponent in a heavyweight bout May 24 in San Jose, tested positive for two types of steroids. They were suspended indefinitely.
“They have a right to appeal,” Garcia said yesterday. “My recommendation is suspension until the end of the licensing year and a $2,500 fine for both. We will give them the 30 days to appeal. If they don’t, that’s what the suspension will be.”

DUCKS SIGN CARLYLE TO 1-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION
Anaheim Ducks coach Randy Carlyle signed a one-year extension yesterday to guide the Stanley Cup champions through the 2008-09 season.
“Randy has been the perfect fit for this organization with his hardworking, aggressive style,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said Wednesday. “He has been a major factor in the success we’ve had the past two seasons.”
The Ducks became the first California team to win the Cup when they finished off the Ottawa Senators 4–1 in the championship series last week.

NFL ALLOWS NOLAN, DEL RIO TO WEAR SUITS AT HOME GAMES
The National Football League will allow coaches Mike Nolan of the San Francisco 49ers and Jack Del Rio of the Jacksonville Jaguars to wear suits at each of their eight home games this season.
Both will wear a jacket and tie made by Adidas AG’s Reebok, the league’s official supplier of gameday clothing, said Brian McCarthy, a spokesman for the NFL. Reebok also designed the suits both men wore last season at two home games. The NFL requires that all coaches wear Reebok apparel, most of which is sportswear. McCarthy said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell canvassed coaches at the league meeting in Phoenix earlier this year, and Nolan and Del Rio again said they would like to wear suits.

PINEHURST NO. 2 COURSE TO HOST 2014 U.S. OPEN
Pinehurst no. 2 has been selected as the site of golf’s U.S. Open in 2014, the third time the North Carolina resort course will host the championship.
Walter Driver, president of the U.S. Golf Association, made the announcement during a news conference today at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, the site of this year’s tournament.
Pinehurst no. 2 hosted the U.S. Open in 1999, when Payne Stewart holed a winning 15-foot putt on the final hole, and in 2005, when Michael Campbell finished at even par and held off Tiger Woods to win his first major title.
