WOODS STRUGGLES IN FIRST ROUND OF OWN TOURNAMENT

Tiger Woods stood at the third tee, soaking wet from a sudden downpour and frustrated by bogeys on the first two holes of his own tournament. It didn’t get any better after that. After a brief rain delay, Woods continued to be a much more gracious host than he had planned. By the time his round was over, he had missed a 2-foot tap-in, hit a man in the face with a drive and tossed his putter in frustration at his bag several times. His scorecard yesterday at the inaugural AT&T National included seven bogeys in a 3-over round of 73, tied for 77th place and seven shots behind five co-leaders: Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, K.J. Choi, Joe Ogilvie and Stuart Appleby. Woods putted 34 times, including three three-putts, and he missed every attempt longer than 8 feet.

DEVILS SIGN GOALIE WEEKES

The Devils signed Kevin Weekes yesterday to back up record-setting goaltender Martin Brodeur. Weekes, 32, spent the last two seasons with the Rangers, appearing in 46 games and compiling a record of 18-20-5. Weekes is 96-156-38 with 19 shutouts in nine NHL seasons with Florida, Vancouver, the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay, Carolina and the Rangers. His career goals-against average is 2.90.

SOCCER

U.S. LOSES TO COLOMBIA

Brad Guzan made several key saves, including one on a penalty, in his first Copa America appearance but couldn’t get to Jaime Castrillon’s 14th-minute header and the United States lost 1–0 to Colombia last night.

It was the first time the United States lost three in a row since 2001. Both teams were eliminated from South America’s soccer championship the day before when Brazil beat Ecuador, but the match nevertheless took on urgency at the finish. Colombia goalkeeper Robinson Zapata was given a second yellow card and sent off for wasting time in the 84th minute when he fiddled with his shoe after Kyle Beckerman’s tying goal was called back for offside.

As his teammates pleaded with Venezuelan referee Manuel Andarcia to no avail, Zapata took off his goalkeeper’s jersey and striker Hugo Rodallega stepped into the net because Colombia had used all three of its substitutions.
