REVIS SIGNS WITH JETS AFTER LENGTHY HOLDOUT

The Jets signed first-round pick Darrelle Revis yesterday, ending the touted cornerback’s lengthy holdout.

Revis, selected 14th overall after New York traded up to draft him, missed 22 practices — including Wednesday’s single practice — and the team’s preseason opener last Friday against Atlanta since training camp started July 27.

“It was tough,” Revis said Wednesday night. “Basically being a competitor and being the type of football player that I am, I didn’t want to sit there and see my teammates playing. I was frustrated for a while, but I just looked at the positive side of it and let my agents handle it.”

BARRY BONDS CONNECTS FOR 759TH HOMER

Barry Bonds added to his home run record not far from where Hank Aaron broke the previous mark, hitting No. 759 off Atlanta’s Tim Hudson in the sixth inning Wednesday night.

The San Francisco slugger drove the first pitch of the sixth over the center-field wall at Turner Field, tying the game at 2.

Andruw Jones leaped for the 403-foot drive and hung on top of the wall, but the Braves’ Gold Glove winner had no chance of catching Bonds’s 25th homer of the season.

NADAL RETIRES AT CINCINNATI DUE TO INJURY

Top-ranked Roger Federer handily beat qualifier Julien Benneteau 6–3, 6–3 last night at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in a match devoid of surprises.

The drama came earlier.

Losses by Rafael Nadal, looking nothing like the second-ranked player in the world, and Novak Djokovic, who last week beat the top three players in the world, marked a day of upsets and injuries.

Benneteau, of France, held serve in three games in each set, as Federer did nothing flashy but seemed to rattle Benneteau whenever Federer chose to go to the net.

Earlier, Nadal — his right knee wrapped and his left wrist aching — retired in the second set of his match against Juan Monaco of Argentina.
