CARDINALS’ LEINART LEAVES WITH BROKEN COLLARBONE

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart fractured his left collarbone while getting sacked late in the first half of yesterday’s 34–31 victory over the St. Louis Rams. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Leinart, the team’s first-round pick in 2006, would be out indefinitely.

“We don’t know how long it’s going to be,” Whisenhunt said. “But it’s going to be for an extended period of time.”

GREEN KNOCKED OUT OF GAME AFTER THROWING BLOCK

Miami Dolphins quarterback Trent Green rejoined his team after he sustained a concussion in yesterday’s game against Houston and was taken to a hospital.

Green was back in the locker room after the Dolphins’ 22–19 loss, with a bandage behind his right ear.

The 37-year-old Green was sidelined for more than half of last season for the Kansas City Chiefs after sustaining a concussion in the opener. Cameron doubted Green would play next week when the Dolphins face Cleveland. He wouldn’t speculate on Green’s future beyond that.

RUNNER DIES AT CHICAGO MARATHON

In scorching heat and high humidity, the Chicago Marathon took a deadly turn yeserday. One runner died, at least 49 were hospitalized and thousands were denied the chance to cross the finish line in the race long known for its brisk fall temperatures and flat terrain. About 10,000 of the 45,000 registered runners chose to not race in the heat despite more mist stations, cooling buses and water-soaked sponges, while another 10,934 started but didn’t finish, officials said. Kenya’s Patrick Ivuti won.
