PANTHERS SIGN TESTAVERDE
Vinny Testaverde isn’t finished yet — even at age 43. The Carolina Panthers, desperate for a quarterback with Jake Delhomme out for the season and David Carr banged up, signed Testaverde to a one-year deal yesterday. Testaverde, the no. 1 overall pick by Tampa Bay in the 1987 draft, practiced in his familiar no. 16 jersey yesterday, while hearing his teammates call him “Dad” as he came up to the line of scrimmage.
“I haven’t told them yet, but I have probably forgot more football than these guys already know,” Testaverde said.
CYCLING
LANDIS WILL APPEAL RULING
The final uphill climb in Floyd Landis’s Tour de France odyssey will end in a Swiss courtroom. The American cyclist decided yesterday to try to regain his 2006 championship at the Court of Arbitration for Sport — the top court for sports — hoping arbitrators there will reverse an earlier decision to ban him for two years and strip him of his title for using performance-enhancing drugs.
“I want to take this opportunity to say again, that I am innocent of the doping allegations against me,” Landis said. “I hope that the arbitrators of the case will fairly address the facts showing that the French laboratory made mistakes, which resulted in a false positive.”
