‘PACMAN’ JONES TO TAKE DEAL IN STRIP CLUB SHOOTING

Suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones is prepared to take a plea deal that will get him probation in a Las Vegas strip club triple shooting in an attempt to salvage his career. Under the written plea agreement obtained by the Associated Press, Jones intends to plead no contest to one charge of conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct, a gross misdemeanor, in return for a promise to suspend a sentence of one year in county jail.

Las Vegas police identified Jones as the person who incited a February 19 fight inside the Minxx Gentlemen’s Club minutes before three people were shot outside.

STARS FIRE GM, NAME HULL INTERIM REPLACEMENT

Brett Hull is once again in an important position at a crucial time for the Dallas Stars. Hull and Les Jackson were both made interim co-general managers of the Stars after the team fired Doug Armstrong yesterday.

Armstrong, the Stars’ general manager since 2002, was let go after a disappointing 7–7 start following a third straight exit in the first round of the playoffs. He left team headquarters in suburban Frisco without comment.

SUNDHAGE REPLACES RYAN AS U.S. WOMEN’S COACH

Pia Sundhage’s immersion into U.S. culture introduced her to Americans’ “Go for it” mentality. But when it comes to soccer, her fellow Swedes’ deliberateness might sometimes work best, the former international star said yesterday after being hired as the U.S. women’s national team coach.

American officials turned to a foreign coach for the first time after failing to win this year’s World Cup. Sundhage, an assistant for China during the World Cup, is familiar with many of the U.S. players, having coached in the WUSA during the league’s three-year existence. She wants her new team to control the ball and dictate tempo more.

GOLF

PLAYOFFS IN 2008 TAKE BREAK FOR RYDER CUP

The PGA Tour decided to put another cup ahead of its own yesterday, moving the FedEx Cup finale to the week after the Ryder Cup next year to allow Americans to be fresh as they try to end a decade of losing.

Without switching around the 2008 schedule, some players might have competed four consecutive weeks in the FedEx Cup, then headed straight to Valhalla Golf Club for the Ryder Cup, regarded as one of the most tiring and pressure-packed weeks in golf. The changes means there will be a two-week break in the middle of the playoffs, between the BMW Championship in St. Louis and the Tour Championship in Atlanta. And it gives the PGA Tour its first week without golf during the season since 1989.

DRUG TESTING TO ARRIVE ON PGA TOUR NEXT SUMMER

Starting in July on the PGA Tour, players who register for a tournament could be given a locker, a tee time for their pro-am and a cup to submit a sample for their drug test.

The PGA Tour plans to start its drug-testing program next year after six months of an intensive education program, with penalties for a positive test ranging from a one-year suspension for the first offense to a lifetime ban if a player is caught three times.

TEXAS TECH’S LEACH FINED RECORD $10,000

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was fined a record $10,000 by the Big 12 Conference yesterday for his harsh criticism of game officials following last week’s loss to Texas. The fine doubled the previous high by the league, levied twice before, against Kansas coach Mark Mangino three years ago and former Kansas State basketball coach Jim Wooldridge during the 2005-06 season.

“Made my feelings known already, so I don’t have a reaction,” Leach told The Associated Press after practice Tuesday afternoon. “We’ve broke records around here before. We’re used to breaking records.”

BASKETBALL

CELTICS MOVE TO 6–0

Paul Pierce scored 31 points, and the Boston Celtics beat the Indiana Pacers 101–86 last night to remain unbeaten. Pierce made 14 of 14 free throws and had 11 rebounds. Kevin Garnett added 18 points and 11 rebounds, his sixth double-double in six games, as Boston (6–0) matched its best start since the 1987–88 season. Boston still is chasing its best start, 14 straight wins to begin the 1957–58 season.
