Tour de France Sastre Holds Lead; Braces for Time Trial

No “crazy” attacks, conserve energy, and hope for the best in the time trial: Tour de France leader Carlos Sastre is tipping his strategy as the race creeps toward its finish in Paris on Sunday.

The Spanish veteran didn’t see the chance he was looking for to expand his lead against his top rivals in yesterday’s 18th stage out of the Alps, which Germany’s Marcus Burghardt won by heading a two-man breakaway.

With a flat ride on tap for Friday, the final showdown in cycling’s premiere event comes in Saturday’s Stage 20 — a 32.9-mile race from Cerilly to Saint-Amand-Montrond. Sastre insists that he doesn’t want to think about that stage just yet, but time trial aces Cadel Evans of Australia and Russia’s Denis Menchov — who are among those nipping at his heels — are clearly on his mind.

Bonds Among Topics at Yankees’ Meetings

Barry Bonds in pinstripes? If nothing else, the New York Yankees plan to talk about it.

Yankees officials gathered for high-level meetings at their spring training complex Thursday, a day off for the team before it begins an important three-game series at Boston.

Co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner acknowledged he’d mention Bonds, the indicted home run king who became a free agent when the San Francisco Giants did not bring him back.

“I’ll mention it. We’ll cover everything,” Steinbrenner said before the meetings began. “No stone will be left unturned.”

Norman Struggles to 75 at Senior British Open

Four days after nearly making history at the British Open, Greg Norman labored to a 4-over 75 yesterday in the opening round of the Seniors British Open to finish seven shots behind co-leaders Bruce Vaughan and Eduardo Romero. In sunny conditions at Troon, Norman bogeyed six of the first 10 holes and was 6 over before he finally birdied the par-4 13th. He birdied the final hole with a pitch to 3 feet.

Roddick Upset at Rogers Cup in Toronto

Andy Roddick followed Roger Federer out of the Rogers Cup.

The sixth-seeded Roddick was upset by 44th-ranked Marin Cilic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 yesterday.

“His aggressiveness is what won him that match today,” Roddick said. “He took it to me a lot more than I took it to him.”
