NEW YORK (AP) – Darrell Rasner pitched the way Roger Clemens hopes to with the New York Yankees.

Before Clemens revealed that he’ll return to the Yankees this season, making a dramatic announcement from the owner’s box during the seventh-inning stretch, Rasner limited Seattle to three hits Sunday in a 5-0 victory over the Mariners.

Derek Jeter hit a go-ahead single and Hideki Matsui got his 2,000th professional hit as the Yankees won for the fifth time in six games after losing eight of nine.

The bigger news was the return of Mr. Clemens, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner. He left the Yankees after the 2003 season, saying he was retiring, but after Andy Pettitte signed with the Houston Astros, Mr. Clemens followed his friend to their hometown team.

Mr. Pettitte returned to the Yankees this year, and Mr. Clemens followed on Sunday.

At the end of the seventh-inning stretch, Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard told fans to turn their attention to the box, where Mr. Clemens was standing with a microphone. As the video scoreboard in right-center showed Mr. Clemens, he made the announcement himself.

“It’s a privilege to be back,” he said.

Mr. Clemens agreed to a minor league contract and most likely will join the Yankees after spending several weeks getting into shape.

There was some drama during the game, too.

Benches and bullpens emptied, but no punches were thrown, when Yankees reliever Scott Proctor threw an inside pitch to Yuniesky Betancourt with none on and two outs in the seventh.

Josh Phelps, who went out of the way to collide with Seattle catcher Kenji Johjima while sliding to score New York’s first run in the fifth, had been hit by the first pitch to him from Jarrod Washburn (2-3) in the sixth. Umpires warned both dugouts for the second time in three days, and Yankees manager Joe Torre came out to speak with plate umpire Mike Everitt.

Mr. Proctor and Mr. Torre were ejected after the pitch behind Mr. Betancourt, and Sean Henn relieved.

Mr. Rasner (1-1) threw first-pitch strikes to 15 of his first 18 batters and 17 of 22 overall. He struck out four and walked two in 5 2-3 innings, the second straight strong outing for the Yankees’ rotation. On Saturday, Chien-Ming Wang took a bid for a perfect game into the eighth.

Four relievers combined to finish the four-hitter Sunday, New York’s first shutout of the season.

Mr. Washburn (2-3) gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Mr. Matsui’s 2,000th hit originally was scored an error on left fielder Raul Ibanez, who allowed the fly ball to drop on the sunny afternoon, but later was changed to a double. Matsui has 1,390 hits in Japan’s Central League and 610 more with the Yankees.

Mr. Jeter and Bobby Abreu hit RBI singles in the fifth, and Wil Nieves added an RBI grounder in the sixth. New York added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh when Mr. Abreu hit a run-scoring double off Chris Reitsma and scored on Matsui’s single. The runs were unearned because of a throwing error by Adrian Beltre on Mr. Jeter’s leadoff grounder to third.

Notes:@ Mariners reliever Julio Mateo was suspended for 10 days without pay, a day after he was arrested following a dispute with a woman at a Manhattan hotel. Mateo was suspended for missing Saturday’s game without permission, the Mariners said. The suspension, if allowed to stand, would cost him $54,645 of his $1 million salary this year. … Seattle recalled RHP Sean Green from Triple-A Tacoma to fill the roster spot. Mateo was optioned to the minors after Saturday’s game.
