The raven-haired design duo behind Rodarte, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, solidified the label’s “right now” status yesterday with a fall-winter 2008 collection staged at the Dia Art Foundation Center in Chelsea. The runway show opened with a series of gauzy, blush- and cream-colored blouses tucked into voluminous pouf skirts. These were paired with cobweb-patterned tights, fingerless leather gloves, and Christian Louboutin stilettos all in icy white. The Mulleavy sisters — self-described outsiders who tagged the label after their mother’s maiden name — did not disappoint the decidedly insider fashion crowd, showing feathery waistcoats and sleek cigarette pants that had the appearance of having been gently labored over on a Singer sewing machine.
