CAPE COD

Autumn is one of the finer seasons to spend on the Cape. Traffic has thinned out, the beaches are all yours, and the air is deliciously crisp. One of the most attractive Cape towns to hang your hat for a weekend is little Brewster, as charming a New England village as any, replete with broad bay beaches, sea captains’ homes, and good restaurants. Brewster is also home to the excellent Ocean Edge Resort & Club, right behind Route 6A (the historic Old King’s Highway) on a bluff that overlooks Cape Cod Bay. It’s a classic, family friendly Cape retreat that includes an array of upscale accommodation and dining options, an 18-hole PGA championship golf course, and USPTA-certified tennis complex. There’s also an elegant wooden walkway that leads to a 700-foot stretch of beach, from which you can see to the very tip of the Cape. From November 4 to 26, Ocean Edge offers Well Done with Williams-Sonoma Weekends, which include a two-night stay in a one-bedroom villa; chef demonstrations including lessons from head chef Michael Gregory and the resort’s pastry chef; daily breakfast for two including petite Belgian waffles; a “create-your-own” participatory lunch, and a dinner for two cook-off contest in which the winner receives a Williams-Sonoma gift certificate. The package rate is $555.

NEWPORT

Think the only way to get a glimpse of one of Newport, R.I.’s fabled Gilded Age mansions is on a guided tour? In general that’s the case, but guests of the Chanler at Cliff Walk have the privilege of actually staying in one. The Chanler was built in 1865 as a summer residence for New York Rep. John Winthrop Chanler and his wife, Margaret Astor Ward. It was the very first mansion to occupy the Cliff Walk, which winds for some three and a half miles behind such opulent “cottages” as the Breakers, Rosecliff, and Chateau-sur-Mer. Now the property, which overlooks the broad sweep of Easton’s Beach, has been sumptuously renovated and features 20 guest rooms, each of which has a different style – from over-the-top Gothic to a nautically-oriented “Nantucket.” These meticulously executed themes carry over to the beautiful guest bathrooms. Now through October 31, the Chanler offers a Midweek Getaway package for a one-night stay that includes a bottle of sparkling wine and exotic fresh fruit bowl upon arrival, dinner in the Spiced Pear restaurant, a postprandial butler-drawn bath, and continental breakfast the following morning. The price is $673 a night.

BOSTON

If you’re looking for a first-class hostelry for an overnight at the outset or end of a weekend New England foliage tour, consider the elegant XV Beacon on the peak of Beacon Hill. Breakfast-inclusive rates start at $395.
