The Fiscal Responsibility Act that finally resolved the debt ceiling standoff might have solved a crisis in the short term — but it lays a perilous trap for whoever is elected president in 2024. It suspends the ceiling until January 2, 2025, at which time the new ceiling becomes whatever is the then-outstanding amount of national debt.
