Anti-Immigration Riots Erupt in Belfast Following Unprovoked Knife Attack on White Man

The attempted beheading of a man on a Belfast street — allegedly carried out by a Sudanese asylum seeker — has inflamed tensions over migration in Northern Ireland.A judge on Wednesday ordered the suspect, Hadi Alodid, to be held in jail. Mr. Alodid is charged with attempted murder, possessing a knife, and threatening to kill a medical worker who treated him for a hand injury after the attack.The knife attack — captured on video and widely shared — left the victim with serious injuries. A prosecutor told the court that the victim, identified as Stephen Ogilvy, has lost his left eye and has damage to his right eye from the attack.Right-wing British activist Tommy Robinson called for a nationwide mobilization. Elon Musk amplified the post and the streets of Belfast erupted Tuesday evening with protesters burning homes and cars with migrants appearing to be specifically targeted.The Police Service of Northern Ireland called the incidents “sporadic pockets of disorder” and said officers were responding as needed. “We are again appealing for calm and ask all voices of influence within local communities to encourage peaceful protest and discourage any involvement in violence or disorder, ” the assistant chief constable, Ryan Henderson, said in a release.“The scenes we all saw last night were nothing short of disgraceful. Families fleeing their homes as masked men set fire to their houses, their possessions, their cars, everything they owned decimated,” First Minister Michelle O’Neill said in a video she posted to X. “The attack in north Belfast was heinous and it was absolutely wrong, but what we are now witnessing is that attack being exploited by dangerous and reckless people to target innocent people who had absolutely nothing to do with it.”Police escorted some families from their homes in armored vehicles on Wednesday morning to relocate them to other areas of the city.A prominent dissident Republican, Damien “Dee” Fennell, said he was mobilizing with other individuals to protect minority families who were targets of violence. “It is the people that have traumatised these families that we don’t want. You are absolute scum,” Mr. Fennell said in a social media post the Belfast Telegraph reported.Hundreds of people donated around $10,000 through a GoFundMe to repair riot damage to a Turkish immigrant’s barber shop. “The family are truly grateful for the support received,” fundraiser organizer Sheila Tang wrote in an update. “They have advised any extra money left after repairs will be put back into the local community.”The attack took place in a Catholic nationalist neighborhood, the news site UnHerd noted. It reported that anti-migrant riots have usually involved Loyalists with Catholic nationalists staying on the sidelines.The alleged attacker had flown from Sudan to Paris and then to Dublin before arriving in Belfast in 2023. He holds a five-year temporary visa as an asylum seeker.Some Irish Republican activists have seized upon the attack as a reason to bar mass migration. “While we oppose all such acts, it is important to acknowledge that this particular attack is a result of deliberate state policy aimed at breaking up working-class Irish communities, as has been done in communities throughout Europe,” Fronta Poblachtach said in an X post.The Irish Republican Socialist Party also tried to pin the crime on mass migration. “The violent attacks and murders that we’ve seen committed just in the past few weeks are consistent with the escalating level of crime in this country which has followed the sharp rise in mass immigration, an escalation that can no longer be denied,” the party said in an X post.
