Anti-Israel Activists Seek Sanctions Against Jewish Summer Camps in Canada

A coalition of anti-Israel groups is seeking to put pressure on the Canadian government to revoke the accreditation for Jewish summer camps because of what it says are the camps’ “support” for the Israel Defense Forces.In a post on Instagram, an anti-Israel organization, Justice Peace Advocates, said it identified 17 Jewish camps in Canada that have “expressed explicit support for the Israeli military.” Other groups, such as the Canadian BDS Coalition and the Ontario Palestinian Rights Association, signed onto the statement. The post said that they do not have issues with the camps because they “encourage connection to Jewish identity,” but because they “encourage support for a genocidal, settler-colonial state.”It also called for the camps that hire or host current or former members of the Israeli military to have their accreditations revoked, and provided a link so people could email the members of the board of directors. Besides camps, the groups also took issue with the executive director of the Ontario Camps Association, Joy Levy, who has openly expressed support for Israel. The groups called for the board of directors of the camps association to “take action against” Ms. Levy for her support of Israel. In a statement on Friday, the association said, “The accusations, aimed at our executive director, members of the OCA team, and several member camps, draw directly on stereotyped libels and tropes related to Israel, Zionism, and Jewish people — including ‘genocide’ and ‘colonizers,’ symbolic categories that are so often spread with specifically malicious intent.”“The stated objective of that campaign is to pressure accreditation bodies to revoke or reconsider the standing of Jewish camps and to seek disciplinary action against staff,” the statement added. “OCA is a provincial standards and accreditation body. We do not adjudicate international geopolitical conflicts, nor do we evaluate member camps based on their religious or cultural identity.”The United Jewish Appeal Federation of Greater Toronto said in a statement on Instagram that it is “aware of a campaign by anti-Israel agitators seeking to bully and harass some of our camps.”“This direct targeting of Jewish campers and staff is a deliberate act of intimidation,” it said. The UJA added that the Jewish Security Network is “actively monitoring the situation” and “conducting ongoing risk assessments and providing structured security guidance, training, and support to ensure that summer camps remain safe and secure for all participants.”
