Officials say a new computer system at Long Island’s Jones Beach theater will help them do a better job of tracking approaching storms.

The development follows a close call with a lightning strike during an R.E.M. concert at the outdoor theater three weeks ago.

State parks regional director Ronald Foley says procedures there also are being evaluated.

Mr. Foley says that when the lightning struck, the theater manager was on the verge of having an evacuation announcement made, and removing the opening act — Modest Mouse — from the stage.
