A new musical based on John Milton’s poem “Paradise Lost” will come to Broadway in the 2008-09 season, the show’s producers announced Wednesday.

The timeless struggle between good and evil is the theme of “Angels,” conceived of by two unlikely playwrights from the University of Sydney. An aeronautical engineer, Ken Lai, composed the score; he and an architect, Marcus Cheong, co-wrote the book and lyrics. The musical recounts an ancient war between the angels and Lucifer’s fallen minions, told through the eyes of Sera, the angel of light.

“Angels” will head to Broadway from the Strand Theatre in Shreveport, La., where it will run from August 29 to September 13. Rich Fowler will direct.
