AUTUMN DEFENSE Opening with the line “Why am I so sad?” on the 2003 album “Circles,” Autumn Defense writes melancholic, blatantly retro 1960s and ’70s rock songs. Using horn and string backing and voice harmonizing, the band manages to achieve just what it strives for, which is likeable enough. The side project of Wilco’s John Stirratt and Pat Sansone will play material from its forthcoming album. Wednesday at the Living Room (154 Ludlow Street, 212-533-7235) and Thursday at Pete’s Candy Store (709 Lorimer Street, Brooklyn, 718-302-3770).
JOHN HOLLENBECK’S LARGE ENSEMBLE Leading an 18-piece ensemble, percussionist John Hollenbeck – who often travels in free-jazz circles – will present new orchestral works that interweave diverse musical influences, ranging from minimalist composition to jazz-influenced free improvisation to ethereal ambient chants. Friday and Saturday at the Kitchen (512 W. 19th Street, 212-255-5793).
Also, Wu-Tang Clan, Tuesday at Hammerstein Ballroom (311 West 34th Street, 212-564-4882); Ikue Mori, Thursday at the Stone (Northwest corner of Avenue C and Second Street); New York Dolls, Sunday at Avalon (47 W. 20th Street 212-807-7780); Samara Lubelski, Sunday at Knitting Factory (74 Leonard Street, 212-219-3132); Wolfmother, Sunday at Northsix (58 N. Sixth Street, Brooklyn, 718-384-1369).
