Big Jump in Tax Refunds Expected This Year Are By Republican Design

As tax season gets underway, President Trump is boasting that it will be the largest tax refund season in history thanks to the tax plan pushed through Congress last year with no Democratic support.The average refund is expected to be $3,800, according to analysis by the Tax Foundation, up from $3,052 last year.The increase, however, is hardly an example of government largesse. It’s by design — Republicans drafted the legislation with language that intentionally boosted the refunds.The Internal Revenue Service also helped. The tax cuts baked into the One Big Beautiful Bill Act were retroactive to the start of last year, but the IRS did not update its withholding tables that employers use to help decide how much federal taxes to pull out of paychecks for their employees.If the tables had been adjusted, workers would have seen increases in take-home pay throughout the year but would have smaller tax refunds for overpayment. “Hell yeah, that was intentional,” Congressman Nick LaLota told the Wall Street Journal. Among the major tax cuts was an increase in the maximum child tax credit, an increase in the standard deduction, and an increase in the state and local tax deduction benefitting filers in high-tax states like New York and New Jersey.Seniors, among the most reliable voting blocs, have their own temporary tax perk in the new tax law, with a $6,000 deduction for individuals and $12,000 for couples. The deduction sunsets after the 2028 election.“Overall, we’re expecting these changes to increase refunds by 15 to 20 percent on average,” Morgan Stanley economist Heather Berger said in a podcast this month. Ms. Berger says the increased refunds is expected to boost the economy.“Historically, U.S. consumers receive about 30 to 45 percent of tax refunds by the end of February, with then 60 to 70 percent arriving by the end of March,” Ms. Berger says. “Because of the new tax provisions, we’re anticipating a noticeable boost in personal income during the first quarter of the year.”It is unclear if voters will remember that boost when they are casting their ballot months later, or whether other issues will drive their vote as Republicans attempt to keep their slim majority in Congress.Democrats continue to highlight what they call an affordability crisis in America with rising insurance costs, high housing costs, and living expenses rising faster than household incomes.
