Bigger and Brighter Meteors Are Lighting Up the Sky — and That’s Got Stargazers on Edge

Across North America and Europe — in fact, the whole world — brilliant fireballs have lit up the night sky, with one slamming into Texas, punching through the roof of a house.From March 17 to 23 alone, very bright meteors were reported in Ohio, California, Michigan, Georgia, and Texas. Outside the United States, Vancouver logged a fireball on March 3, while France and Germany reported sightings on March 8 and 11. Many of the events were unusually dramatic, streaking across large stretches of sky, lasting longer than typical meteors, and in some cases generating pressure waves and sonic booms.That sudden burst of celestial activity has prompted an obvious question: What on Earth (or in the sky) is going on? The answer is: something. The American Meteor Society’s reporting database logged 1,590 reports of fireballs in the sky in the United States in January, 1,434 in February, and more than 3,175 in March. So far in April there have been 1,224 fireball sightings in America. Worldwide the numbers are even more staggering: 2,567 sightings in January, 2,553 in February, 8,249 in March, and 3,465 so far in April.The biggest attention-grabber came on March 21, when a 1-ton, 3-foot-wide meteor exploded over Texas. According to NASA, the fireball was traveling at 35,000 mph, produced a loud sonic boom, and left behind a cannonball-sized fragment that crashed through the roof of a house in Bammel, north of Houston. It landed in a bedroom, which tends to focus public attention.A detailed analysis by the American Meteor Society suggests this is not just a case of more people looking up. Mike Hankey, who led the report, found that while total fireball counts are only modestly above recent years, the number of big, widely witnessed events has jumped sharply. Events with 50 or more reports have more than doubled, and those with more than 100 reports have doubled as well. Smaller events, by contrast, remain fairly normal.That does not necessarily mean Earth has entered some asteroid shooting gallery, but experts do think something unusual may be happening. “The number of large fireball events (those seen by 50+ witnesses) has roughly doubled in Q1 2026 compared to the five-year average. But the total number of fireballs is about normal. So it’s not that more rocks are hitting us — it’s that more of them are big enough to notice,” AMS Operations Manager Mike Hankey wrote in a piece about spiking activity.“The short answer: yes, it’s up — and the data tells us something interesting about why,” the skywatcher said and offered one explanation for why, saying the asteroidal objects are “on orbits similar to Earth’s, moving in the same direction we are.”“When they encounter Earth, our orbital velocity is effectively subtracted from theirs, so they enter the atmosphere at relatively low speeds. Slower entry means the meteor lasts longer in the sky, is visible over a wider area, produces sonic booms more often, and more material survives to reach the ground as meteorites. That’s exactly what we’ve been seeing — including two rare HED achondrite falls (Germany and Ohio) in just nine days,” he wrote.Technology is certainly helping spike the number of sightings. Dash cams, doorbell cameras, security footage, and global camera networks have made it easier than ever to catch fireballs in action. Even AI may be playing a small role by steering curious witnesses toward reporting systems.Another reason for more sightings may be noise. In early 2026, nearly 80 percent of large fireballs produced sonic booms — an unusually high proportion. That suggests many of these objects were larger or denser than average, punching deeper into the atmosphere before breaking apart — and prompted people to pay attention.So yes, the uptick appears to be real — at least in part. But researchers stress that this is not an existential threat, just an intriguing burst of sky activity that may reflect a temporary clustering of debris, seasonal effects, or something about the near-Earth environment scientists do not yet fully understand.Either way, keep your eyes on the sky.
