DELTA TO CUT FARES: TIME
Delta Air Lines, the no. 3 American carrier, is expected to slash fares and remove ticketing rules such as required Saturday-night stays next week, Time magazine reported on its Web site yesterday. The Atlanta-based airline is also expected to halve ticket-change fees to $50 from $100 and slash fares nationwide on everything from first-class to last-minute tickets, Time reported. Delta hasn’t published fares yet, but in a test program in Cincinnati in August, the highest ticket price to anywhere was $499 for coach and $599 for first class, Time reported. TheDelta.com Web site is also being redesigned to make it easier for customers to search for cheaper fares, get refunds, and change tickets, Time reported. Delta is bowing to pressure from low-cost carriers such as Southwest and Jet-Blue. The other so-called Big Six airlines will also be pressured to follow. Delta averted a bankruptcy filing in October when its pilots approved a $1 billion giveback. Delta is also overhauling its operations by adding 81 flights and seven new destinations from Atlanta.
