China “strongly opposes” an American decision to consider limits on imports of five types of textile products including socks and skirts, saying the move encourages abuse of the industry’s special restrictive measures.
The move “deviates from the World Trade Organization’s principle of free trade and the spirit of textile trade liberalization,” a spokesman of the Beijing-based Commerce Ministry, Chong Quan, said in a Web site statement.
The U.S. Commerce Department said August 1 it accepted petitions to consider caps on imports of socks, woven shirts, fiber skirts, fiber nightwear, and swimwear. It has 60 days to make a decision. A similar petition to study curbs on China-made curtains was accepted for consideration last month.
