Legalizing gay marriage would yield $142 million in economic benefits for New York City, according to a report released yesterday by Comptroller William Thompson.
The added spending would come mainly from wedding-related expenses for New York couples as well as an estimated 56,000 couples who would travel from out of state to get married in the next three years. Statewide, the economy would gain $184 million.
Mr. Thompson was joined at a press conference announcing the report by a couple who plan to travel to Massachusetts to get married, Yetta Kurland and Elizabeth Koke. “Despite the substantial amount of money that we will spend, we will make no contribution to the New York economy,” Ms. Kurland said. “I hope that this report released today is a clear example of how expensive homophobia is.”
