Xerox, Powerset Sign Up With Amazon.com

Amazon.com Inc.’s lesser-known business of providing Internet-based computing and data storage has two new high-profile customers, its chief executive said Wednesday.
The addition of Xerox Corp.’s Xerox Global Services and Powerset, an upand-coming search engine, provides more evidence that Amazon.com’s push into what are called Web services can be a viable moneymaker for the online retailer, Jeff Bezos said during an appearance on stage at the Web 2.0 Summit.
“It can be a meaningful, financially attractive business one day,” Amazon’s chief said during a question-and-answer session before several hundred conference participants.
Mr. Bezos did not reveal financial details of deals recently sealed with Powerset and IBM.
Known primarily as an Internet seller, Amazon’s newest customers highlight its growing business of essentially renting out the infrastructure it uses for a few pennies per hour.
Two services have evolved: one in which Amazon will store a company’s data, at the price of 15 cents per giga-bit stored per month, and another in which Amazon rents out its network of computing equipment to businesses on an hourly basis.
